Opis konferencji:

The Department of British Literature and Culture, University of Łódź, extends an invitation for multidisciplinary academic papers examining and interrogating the various critical and cultural contexts of “Kitsch” and/or “Camp” within art and the humanities.

“Kitsch”, a term widely used to describe mass-produced objects of questionable taste, was once rejected and reviled by the purveyors of high culture, who saw it as the antithesis of fine art. However, due to evolved cultural attitudes and re-evaluated critical perspectives in an Avant-Garde, postmodern era, the traditionally “lowbrow” aesthetics of Kitsch and Camp are no longer uniformly vilified; but rather lauded as potent and viable sources of artistic inspiration and critical insight for many writers, artists, and theorists.

Drawing from literary analysis, film analysis, visual arts, music, gender studies, sociology, communication and media studies, key attention will be given to papers that identify and illuminate writers/artists, theorists and schools who deploy Kitsch or Camp as a critical address in the following areas:

As a challenge to received dichotomies or demarcations of High and Low Culture.
As engaging social discourses or debates on the politics, ethics, aesthetics and thematics of taste (high and lowbrow).
As a bad taste to be discussed mostly in aesthetic terms or sociologically as a kind of ideological diversion
As an instance of trash culture
As cultivation of bad taste of yesterday and a form of superior refinement.
As “victory of style over content, aesthetics over morality, of irony over tragedy” (Sontag)
As exaggerated and theatrical experience
As culture in “quotation marks” (Sontag)

Papers should be in English. Abstracts (maximum 300 words) should be emailed to the organisers at the address below by 12th February 2012. Please include your name, academic affiliation and contact details.
